Arizona Baseball Split Doubleheader, Won First Pac-10 Series of 2011

After the Arizona Wildcats won the first game of the series thanks to a walk off single by All American catcher Jett Bandy, a rainy Saturday pushed Game 2 to Sunday to set up the first doubleheader of the 2011 season in Jerry Kindall Field, at Frank Sancet Stadium.
In a doubleheader, it is vital to have your starter go for the majority of the game in order to preserve the bullpen and give the team a better chance to win the second game.
Starter Kyle Simon made it to the eighth inning, and with the help of an Arizona nine run offensive barrage that was highlighted by a solo home run by Josh Garcia to give their pitcher a 9-4 lead.
However, Simon was unable to make it out of the inning. Coach Andy Lopez pulled Simon after facing three batters in favor for reliever Nick Cunningham. Unfortunately, Cunningham’s ineffectiveness only made it worse for Simon and the rest of the Wildcats and the lead went down to just one run.
