Wake Forest Baseball Coach Tom Walter Goes to Bat for Player

"I love these kids like they were my own; we're a family around here." How many times have you heard these words uttered from a coach's mouth?
I don't know about you, but I've heard it so often that I've begun to think those words are just a sports cliché with no real meaning at all—or I used to think that.
That changed today when I read a story that's almost too good for Hollywood.
Here's the plot. Stop me if it starts to sound familiar.
A coach spends long hours on the road traveling from one small town to the next in search of that one hidden gem.
He discovers a young high school athlete with enough talent that he has caught the eyes of major league scouts.
Even though the kid has an offer on the table to turn pro, the coach convinces him to pursue his education and develop his skills at the college level.
The kid gets diagnosed with a serious disease and requires a kidney transplant but can't find a match.
Still, he enrolls in school and remains part of the program even though he isn't able to play.
